The conference will be held in the Netherlands Institute in the Pera quarter. We recommend a Hotel in the neighbourhood of Pera or Taksim. From the tourist quarter of Sultanahmet, the NIT can be reached by tram and metro in approximately 30 min.

Flight options
Since the activities of Istanbul Cultural capital of Europe will attract many visitors, we recommend that you book your flights as soon as possible. Istanbul has two airports: Atatürk in the European part (IST) and Sabina Gökçen on the Asiatic counterpart (SAW). The Sabina Gökçen airport recently has been modernized and is linked to the centre by Havaş shuttle (every hour) and by city bus (e.g. the bus to “4.cü Levent”, which is a metro station on the Taksim-Sişhane line). Because of the distance, taxis can be an expensive option. From Atatürk airport, however, the Havaş busses leave every 30 minutes and taxis will cost c. 40 TL or 20 Eur, and you can, alternatively, choose to take the rail connection to the centre.

Hotels in Istanbul
As far as hotels are concerned, we recommend that you search for a hotel in the quarters of Beyoğlu or Taksim, closest to the NIT (from Taksim square it is a 15 min. walk to the NIT, or a 10 minute ride in the historical tram over the Grande Rue de Péra or Istiklal Caddesi). Hotels can be found on the internet, on sites as Booking.com, where 4 or 5 stars hotels with all comforts can still be booked for prices from 80-120 EUR/day.

The Sedotel Hotel has been recommended to us and is offering a special price to conference participants (70 single / 80 double). Should you choose to book the Sedotel Hotel, please be sure to mention this price and details of this offer (conference-Speelman).

We can also recommend Hotel Spektra, in the tourist quarter of Sultan Ahmet (approx. 45 minutes on foot, by tram and by Tünel, the oldest metro in Europe needed to reach the NIT), in the Southern corner of the Hippodrome (today: At Meydanı). This hotel (2-3 stars, with elevator) is ideal for guests that want to visit the main historical monuments of ancient and Ottoman Constantinople. We have reserved all rooms for the period 22.6 (arrival) - 28.6 (departure) at the very special price of: single: 50 EUR, double 60 EUR and triple room 70 EUR, the excellent breakfast included.

An alternative of the same group is the 3 star Sumengen; here, prices are 10 EUR higher in all categories and quality is somewhat better. Here, only a few rooms are available. Please find the contact details for the reservations, below:

Booking and payment
Every participant is responsible for his or her own booking and payment. Rooms will be assigned in order of reservation until all rooms are booked. In case of cancellation within 2 days of arrival, the hotel will charge for the first night. While booking, please refer to the conference and to my name (Speelman). If you have different days of arrival or departure – this is a beautiful season to visit the city with its many palaces, churches, mosques and museums! -, please make this clear to the management.

For all hotels, we recommend of course that you book as soon as possible.

On behalf of Monica Jansen and the other members of the Committee,

Raniero Speelman
