Dear Reader
● ● ●
|
Last week, we began the second semester of
the academic year 2015-2016. This is also the period when
the majority of students are busy making plans for the
following academic year. The first year students are getting
ready to choose an in-depth package, the second year
students are mainly deciding which (obligatory) Minor they
wish to take or are finding out which student city abroad
will be suitable for spending a semester in, and some of the
Bachelor students are already at the stage of searching for
a subsequent Master’s or work. |
|
Some matters are going to change in our
faculty with regard to the Master’s offer. The Master’s
programmes have been revised from the academic year
2016-2017. For instance, the study programme of the Master’s
will soon consist of blocks with three courses (each 5 EC)
instead of two courses (each 7.5 EC), as is customary for
the Bachelor’s programmes. Each Master’s programme will have
a better connection to the labour market, in collaboration
with the Career Services faculty. All the Master’s
programmes have become selective. For programmes with a
numerus fixus you have to be enrolled before 1 April. For
the other programmes, a deadline of 1 June applies. For
Humanities, it will only be possible to enrol in September;
the February inflow will disappear. So keep this in mind! At
www.uu.nl/masters you will find
all the information about the content of the courses and
registration and enrolment. |
|
In this newsletter, you can also read about
better accommodation and facilities for students in the city
centre, a report about the purpose of completing the
National Students Surveys, the Minor market of 18 May 2016,
the Faculty Council and the University Council. Perhaps
there is a place for you in one of these participation
organs? |
|
I wish you every success with this academic
block! |

National
Students Survey & Education discussions (Bachelor)
|
Each year, you receive the same invitation in
your mailbox to complete the National Students Survey (NSE).
During my first academic year, like many students, I personally
was sceptical about the purpose of such a survey. Your opinion
about your course is added to a large pile of surveys with
differing opinions, this ultimately produces positive or
negative figures and I had very low expectations with regard to
whether anything would be done with these figures. However,
contrary to my expectations, my experience was that these
figures are indeed taken very seriously by the university. A
good example of this is the initiative to organize education
discussions for each programme, as of this year. During the
education discussions, students and lecturers will talk to each
other about the quality of the education, the value of a
Bachelor’s degree and the interpretation of the curriculum. |
|
|
|
The majority of the education discussions have
already taken place. The discussions were well received and were
very useful. For example, for the department of Media and
Cultural Studies, the students noted various problems and
inaccuracies with regard to the interpretation of the curriculum
and the purpose of tutoring. The Director of Education, Vincent
Crone, has promised that he will organize education discussions
again at the end of this academic year, in order to talk about
what solutions were found to the problems indicated. It is
apparent from this that the education discussions work and it is
very useful for students to attend these. |
|
But what does the NSE National Students
Survey have to do with the education discussions? This is very
simple: the results from the NSE figures form the basis for the
subjects of the education discussions. For instance, for the
courses in our faculty, each year we score poorly with regard to
‘the connection to the labour market’ and ‘labour market
orientation’. This is therefore also an important theme for the
education discussions this year. Completing the NSE therefore
serves a greater purpose than ever. Your opinion most definitely
counts and you can give further information about this during
the education discussions. So be sure to attend! |
|
If you haven’t received an invitation to the
education discussion for your course, please send an e-mail to
studentassessor@uu.nl.

City centre
accommodation and facilities
|
If you attend lectures at Drift 21, you will
definitely have noticed: in the corridor with the red benches
there is a large notice board where you can write down what you
would like to see improved at the Drift. In addition, study
societies are sending round surveys in order to collect input.
Are the lecture rooms not too small and is the temperature
pleasant? Is the office of your study society large enough?
Should there be more rooms for being able to meet with fellow
students for a course or for a committee of your society? |
|
There is a reason for asking for your input:
along with the student-assessor, the boards of the study
societies are writing a vision statement with regard to a
pleasant study environment in the city centre. This vision will
be on the agenda of the Faculty Board and Faculty Council at the
end of this academic year. |
|
The results could have an influence on the
development of the accommodation of the faculty in the future.
In any case, it is certain that we as Humanities students wish
to continue to study in the city centre. I’ll be interested to
find out whether in 2030, if I come back to see our beautiful
university in the city centre, a number of aspects from our
vision will have become a reality.

Faculty
Council is looking for a succession!
|
Would you like to be engaged for a year in what is happening in
the faculty, be able to give your opinion directly to the
Faculty Board, and do you wish to commit to a better faculty on
behalf of your fellow students? If so, the Faculty Council will
be just right for you! With 12 employees and 12 students, we
form the highest participation body of the faculty. The student
segment changes on an annual basis, so we are searching for 12
new enthusiastic students who wish to succeed us! |
|
We offer an educational, challenging and
enjoyable year with 11 other students, interesting training
courses, the possibility to learn many new skills, a good
opportunity to expand your network and an excellent remuneration. |

Interested in the University Council?
Would you like to contribute ideas at the highest administrative
level of Utrecht University? Do you wish to have a say in
important decisions? Then seize the chance now and stand for
election to the University Council for 2016-2017. This council
is searching for motivated students who wish to have a say in
matters which concern the whole university and which give
direction to our strategy. You will read more about the
backgrounds in this mail. |
|
For students, membership of the University Council is a paid
position. You can fulfil this administrative position for one
year. You will be a member of the student segment of the
University Council and you will work four days a week as a
Council member. As the student segment, you will have the
opportunity to represent the interests of the students. This
entails for instance giving advice, when requested or otherwise,
to the Executive Board of the university. The University Council
even has the right of consent with regard to a number of
important resolutions. |
|
You can stand as candidate by joining one of the
existing lists, or by setting up a list yourself. The deadline
is Thursday 7 April 2016. On that day, the candidate nomination
period will end. If you wish to set up a new list, you can
contact Anne Marie Partridge, secretary of the Central Electoral
Office. Please get in touch in good time because she must have
received the completed and signed lists of candidates (including
consent statements) by Thursday 7 April 2016 at 17.00 hrs, at
the latest. |
|
Do you have any questions about the elections
for the University Council? Or would you like more information
about the candidate nomination procedure? First check the page
about standing as a candidate on the Utrecht University website,
and if you can’t find the answer to your question, contact Anne
Marie Partridge (a.m.partridge@uu.nl). |

Save the
date: Minor event - 18 May 2016
|
On Wednesday 18 May, the annual Minor event, organized by the
five faculties of Utrecht University which offer Minors, will
take place. For the courses of our faculty, every student is
obliged to take a Minor. The Minor event is therefore an
excellent opportunity to view the complete Minor offer of the
faculty and to find out more about the content of each Minor.
The university offers a total of 128 Minors, 54 of which are
from the Faculty of Humanities. |
|
The Minor event will take place on 18 May 2016 from 17.00 hrs to
19.00 hrs. The Humanities Minors will be presented in the city
centre during information sessions and at the market. |
|
So be sure to note down the date in your diary! More information
will follow in April.
