Het is alweer juni en daarmee eindigt al bijna mijn jaar als student-assessor van het faculteitsbestuur Geesteswetenschappen. Hoewel ik pas in september wissel met mijn opvolger, sluit ik deze periode een groot deel van mijn taken al af. Ik kijk dan ook terug op een zeer geslaagd jaar, waarin ik het werk en de essentie van de studieverenigingen meer op de voorgrond heb willen plaatsen.

In het collegejaar 2016-2017 worden 63 cursussen in het departement Talen, Literatuur en Communicatie opengesteld voor bachelorstudenten die met behulp van luistertaal aan een cursus deel kunnen nemen. Luistertaal is een manier van meertalige communicatie waarbij beide sprekers een andere taal gebruiken, maar voldoende receptieve vaardigheid in de taal van de ander hebben om elkaar goed te kunnen verstaan: zij hoeven de taal van de ander dus niet te kunnen spreken.

1. Het is een verrijking van je eigen studieprogramma op niveau.
2. Je krijgt de kans je taalvaardigheid in een specifieke taal te verbeteren.
3. Je doet ervaring op in een internationale classroom.
4. Het is een mooi opstapje voor als je een periode in het buitenland wilt studeren.
5. Het kan van toegevoegde waarde zijn bij de voorbereiding op je master.

Het collegejaar is bijna ten eind en daarmee is ook ons raadsjaar bijna afgelopen. We kunnen terugkijken op een succesvol jaar. Een aantal van ons heeft een groot project voltooid waarbij de medezeggenschap van GW en het functioneren daarvan in kaart is gebracht. Dit zal worden behandeld in de laatste raadsvergadering van het jaar en de nieuwe raad zal hier verder mee aan de slag gaan. Verder hebben we mee mogen praten over allerlei grote onderwerpen, zoals internationalisering, Caracal en een nieuwe opzet van het Humanities Honours Programme. Daarnaast hebben we flinke stappen gemaakt wat betreft onze zichtbaarheid en hebben we weer 12 goede opvolgers gevonden. Al met al zijn we heel tevreden over wat we dit jaar hebben bereikt en hebben we er het volste vertrouwen in dat de nieuwe raad het ook goed gaat doen!

De meeste studieverenigingen van onze faculteit wisselen traditiegetrouw in september van bestuur. Dit is niet geheel toevallig; de start van een nieuw collegejaar vraagt om nieuwe (frisse) gezichten en houdt daarmee het beleid van de vereniging flexibeler. Ook het bestuur van onze faculteit gaat in september aan deze verandering onderhevig. Niet alleen ik zal (zoals ieder jaar) opgevolgd worden door een nieuw student-bestuurslid, maar ook de vice-decaan van het masteronderwijs, Bert van den Brink, zal het stokje overdragen aan zijn opvolger.

It is June already and this almost concludes my year as a student-assessor of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Humanities. Although I am only replaced by my successor in September, I already conclude a considerable part of my duties during this period. Hence I look back on a very successful year during which I tried to place the work and the essence of the study societies more in the limelight.

In the 2016-2017 academic year 63 subjects in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication are opened up to Bachelor’s students who can participate in a subject with the help of receptive language skills. Lingua Receptiva is a method of multilingual communication where both speakers use a different language but dispose of sufficient receptive skills in the language of the other to understand each other properly: hence they do not need to be able to speak the language of the other person.

The academic year has almost come to an end and this also nearly concludes our council year. We can look back on a successful year. A number of us completed a large project that analysed the employee (and student) representation and its performance. This will be discussed in the last council meeting of the year and the new council will set to work with this. Otherwise we were able to join the discussion about all sorts of important subject matters, like internationalisation, Caracal and a new layout of the Humanities Honours Programme. In addition we took considerable steps in terms of our visibility and once again we were able to find 12 good successors. All in all we are quite pleased with our accomplishments this year and we are very confident that the new council will also do very well!

Faithful to tradition most of the study societies of our Faculty change their board in September. This is not entirely accidental; the start of a new academic year asks for new (fresh) faces and thus keeps the policy of the society more flexible. The Board of our Faculty is also subject to change in September. Not only will I (like every year) be succeeded by a new student-board member but the Vice-Dean of the Master’s programme, Bert van den Brink, will also pass the baton to his successor.
